Fear of Becoming a Man is a true coming of age recall on the stresses and struggles of life that speak to the masses, both men, and women. As I read through the pages, with each page turn I was able to take something away, reflect and relate but on the cusp of the perspective of the fatherless woman. Richard’s story is very poignant and will move you to a deeper insight as to who he is as Richard, a businessman, a change agent and definitely who he is as a MAN. The open penned letter to his son is one that moved me with a haste of emotions. The penned letter speaks to his growth and maturity as a man and willingness to be vulnerable and 100% transparent with us; for both as a reader, I am thankful.Everyone’s life has a purpose, everyone’s birth was manifested to solve a specific problem during the time we have here in our waking lives and Mr. PDQ has definitely found the reason to begin walking in the purpose of his passion.
My two favorite pieces of advice that will forever stick with me are:
“Your strength is your power to not fear failure.”
“Be honest with yourself while accepting your faults and imperfections in your constant growth to always become a better you.”
Thank you for your story, thank you for enduring through the rough times so that you could listen to the voice of God and discover your purpose and then share it with us.

Fear of Becoming a Man Mr Richard Dwight Sutton Ms Alvenia Effie Derban 9780692809914 Books Reviews
I enjoyed the book so very much. It had been my intention to get a hard copy so that I could read it, then pass it along to my 12 year old son, How ever I got so caught up, in the preview of the book I purchased it and read it on my phone via my kindel app. This was a very well written book, I can relate to some of his lifes experiences.
Fear of becoming a man is a very raw and honest account of a young black man's life experiences from childhood through adulthood, and the trials and triumphs he experiences along the way. This book is very insightful, with a conversational tone that makes you feel as if you were alongside the author on his journey through life. Excellent read!
Transparency is not telling all of your business or the deep dark secrets of your life. Transparency is being honest about who you are as a person and the things that you struggle with as you travel through this journey called life!! Not fearing the redicule that you may experience from it but elated by the positive effects it may have on others who can relate by encouraging their hearts and uplifting their spirits to push out the words " I CAN MAKE IT" from the pit of their bellies. Fear of Becoming a Man is the epitome of transparency and a must read for the young and old!
This book allowed me to become more familiar with the bond between a mother & her son from a grown man's perspective. Being a single parent, raising a son in such challenging time, this book is a necessity for the youth & parents of today. We are busy living a microwaveable lifestyle no one stop long enough to think about the residue left in the mind of a child. It's especially difficult when the statistics are already in place by the time our young males are in the third grade creating that pipeline to prison. I experienced a roller coaster ride of emotions that came off the page from each chapter. The development of this book caused me to stop suppressing my younger girl's memories & force me deal with it. Great read! Package it for Big Screen!!
After reading Fear of Becoming a Man by Richard Sutton, my heart fell in love. In love with his story, his trails and tribulations, his hurts and disappointments, his tears and his laughter. Although I have yet to meet him in person, thru reading his life story, I feel like I have known him forever. Thank you for your honesty and openness of your life experiences. Fear of Becoming a Man is a must read for our young black and brown boys and also for us as women. Our black men are not perfect, often wounded from childhood and are left to figure it out as men. Yet, they still stand strong and proud as they continually strive to become that man they always knew they were destined to be. May God continue to bless you and as you bless others with this book. I have an obsession with reading and a true passion for learning. Once I began reading, I didn't want to stop..and I didn't until it was finished.
The moment I began reading I was captivated, wanting more. The author literally grabs his reader’s attention from the first sentence. The vivid words and use of imagery automatically painted pictures of every detail outlined throughout this work. Rich’s genuine passion for empowering and inspiring his audience spills off the pages and fills the mind with hope. Sometimes self-help books cause the reader to lose focus because they don’t “feel real”, but not this one. Mr. Sutton gives us the real uncut truth which does nothing but forces the reader to continually be drawn in.
Fear of Becoming a Man takes you into Mr. Sutton’s life and the struggles he endured growing up in the inner-city of Philadelphia; which led him to make a decision his life experiences would not be who he had to become, but rather the road map that led him to become the man he is today.
Adventuring through Mr. Sutton’s reality illustrates the difficulties of being a Black Man in the United States, and how hard work and determination will be the change factor needed in order to succeed. This work is a catalyst for that change. The audience will have many takeaways from the various life lessons shared. As a woman reading this book, it is still applicable to my life, one takeaway for me is when difficulties approach, reflection, change and growth has to be the only options.
I can honestly say this book is one that readers can return to many times over, getting something new each time.
Richard Sutton, you are an amazing author and will touch the lives of many! Thank you for taking the time to share your story as it will help others to stand in their truths and make a decision for change! Kudos to you, and I look forward to seeing how your life is about to change.
